Buon Journo (spelling?), Sylvia. Or should I say, hi, y'all?
The American South is very hot, of course. As we move closer to the equator the sun is closer. The humidity is high, but that is in cities and other congested places where you don't get a breeze.
Look for 90's-say 105 (max), but not every day. When the heat gets to be too much, a convectional storm usually happens. This type of storm happens almost every steamy hot day around 3 p.m. and does a lovely job of cooling everything off. The storm goes away and you have the rest of the afternoon and evening to enjoy.
That's the American South -- unlike the Mediterranean climate in Italy, especially the south. When we were in Milan last January it actually snowed!! However, we went south to Sorrento and the weather was temperate. If you live in the north of Italy, you will have to adjust to the American South!!
As for the bugs, they are worse in the deep south. You'll hear cicadas on the super-hot afternoons I referenced above. Also mosquitoes can be difficult to bear at times -- just keep away from standing water and have mosquito repellent handy. Having said that, bugs will not be a factor in the enjoyment of your vacation. They are just sometimes an annoyance.
Grazie!

I live in South Central Kentucky, not far from Bowling Green, KY
We are about an hours drive from the Tennessee line.
Summers CAN be brutal. High 80's, low 90's are the norm as is high humidity. Weather patterns (as everywhere) have an affect as we do have days in the low 100's and days with a "heat index" of the low 100's.
Yes, we have bugs but, not unbearably. Wetter weather will raise the Mosquito population. It depends on where you are.
I do believe that, if you are used to the 90's, you can have an enjoyable time
Y'all, hell, you even have the talk down. You'll be alright.

Tennessee probably won't be as hot as Louisiana or Texas. You will find bugs (mosquitoes which can be a huge nuisance), especially if the winter has been mild. Louisiana and Texas aren't usually blessed with rain every three days to cool things off; for the past couple of summers, we've gone without rain for weeks.
Be prepared; bring lots of shorts, sunscreen, and bug repellant. Don't change your plans because you can have lots of fun with the right precautions.

Look at www.wundeground.com
Do a search for Tennessee and you can look up weather from previous dates ranging back years to get an idea of how it usually is during summer. You can also use the site to find the average tempretures. Its an awesome site.
