The most famous case of multiple personality is Sybil.
Sybil was an abused child at a very young age. She needed an escape; however, could not really escape. Sybil's mind then "split" in different personalities so that she could deal with her environment.
One personality was Sybil's anger. Sybil could not herself become angry so "Maggie" was the one who had anger and could express it.
Multiple personality disorder is very rare and can not be faked easily.
I hope that answers your question.

Yes, there has been, in the past, documentation (from the 40's)that confirms such dissorder. Nevertheless, in the recent years there has been a lot of controversy whether or not this personality dissorder is a real thing, even thoough it has been diagnosed recently in some cases.
So, the answer is "yes" it exists, but the contraversy relies on whether or not it is a personality dissorder or a volunatry choice made by a person due to a traumatic experience (see source*).
Nevertheless, keep in mind that this profile has many indications that will facilitate its diagnosis:
Dissociative identity disorder was initially named multiple personality disorder (MPD).
Dissociation is a complex mental process that provides a coping mechanism for individuals confronting painful and/or traumatic situations. It is characterized by a dis-integration of the ego. Dissociation describes a collapse in ego integrity so profound that the personality is considered to literally break apart.
There is considerable controversy over the validity of the Multiple personality profile as a diagnosis. Unlike the more empirically verifiable mood and personality disorders, dissociation is primarily subjective for both the patient and the treatment provider.
Patients often have a remarkable array of symptoms that can resemble other neurologic and psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety disorders, personality disorders, schizophrenic, mood psychoses and seizure disorders. Symptoms of this particular disorder can include:
depression
anxiety (sweating, rapid pulse, palpitations)
phobias
panic attacks
physical symptoms (severe headaches or other bodily pain)
fluctuating levels of function, from highly effective to disabled
time distortions, time lapse, and amnesia
sexual dysfunction
eating disorders
post traumatic stress
suicidal preoccupations and attempts
episodes of self-mutilation
psychoactive substance abuse
Other symptoms include: Depersonalization, which refers to feeling unreal, removed from one's self, and detached from one's physical and mental processes. The patient feels like an observer of his life and may actually see himself as if he were watching a movie.
In order for DID to be diagnosed, there must be two or more distinctly present personalities.

I am actually studying Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID, formerly Multiple Personality Disorder) for my Doctoral Dissertation. Based on Psychological studies the answer to your question is ...unconfirmed. There is a great debate on the psychological field if it is a disorder that people have naturally verses people act that way (subconsciously) due to pressure from others, especially therapists.
I believe that DID can be a valid diagnosis. There have been studies that have shown different biochemistry with the different alters (personalities). They may have different brain waves, different allergies etc. Also, there are other dissociative disorder that are similar and are not the topic of as much controversy.

When an individual goes through traumatic times in life, they change themselves to the situation so that they can fight the situation and in doing that. does effect a persons thoughts, emotions, memories, feelings, actions and identity to be distorted, therefore adding a new personality to the person's system, sometimes one tends to fight back the personality one is not, so one is normal for some time until the personality catches one off guard and one becomes someone else.
This has been depicted in many movies like for example doctor jakyl and hyde, which is one doctor who is kind and inteligent and then another moment he is a monster, whereby in this movie they show him to be taking some chemicals to become someone else, in reality substance abuse does cause disassociative identity disorder or multiple personality.

dissociative identity disorder (multiple personalities) is caused by abuse in childhood. the mind creates other personalities as a way of repression (ignoring the pain) to protect the main personality. most people don't know that they have the other personalities and deny it when any one tells them they do. diagnoses can take upto 6 years and treatment can last up to 20. the only way to cure DID is to use hypnosis to "reunite" the personalities into one whole and emotionally secure personality. Hope this helps!

I'm graduating from my psych degree in summer so i know what i'm talking about. Yep, it does exist, most sufferers just have one other identity. Some cases have been known to have as many as 18 (Eva White/Eva Black etc). Noone knows exactly why it occurs and treatment isnt particularly successful...

Yes I think it is completely true and perhaps it is an inseparable trait of humans because we change our manners so often due to the situations.
