It seems to happen in *all* water whether hot or cold, and doesn't happen to any other part of the body. Why is that?

the water gradually causes the layer of oils on your skin to be washed away. it it these oils that make our skin hydrophobic, (the lipid molecules in them are hydrophobic, thats why u cant mix fat and water together without detergent) this allows the skin to become a selectivley permiable membrane. rubbing butter or lard on your fingers will prevent your fingers and toes from becoming wrinkly as they provide an extra layer of oils on ur skin.

Apparently, it's because your normally waterproof skin soaks up some of the bath water.

It happens to me. It's when our fingers get to much water on them. They then go soft and thin and wrinkle up.

Osmosis - all the water is going from your fingers to the bath.

Nice eh?
