There are many factors which lead to abnormal curvature of the spinal column, excluding the 'natural' or ideal curves. Depending on the cause, the time the problem has been present, and the age of the patient the treatment can be quick or can never resolve.

The purpose of seeing a chiropractor is to restore balance throughout your skeletal system. The different bones connecting to each other can leave one side tilted forward or back, legs shorter or longer, shoulders even tilting one forward and the other back. Each of these things can and do cause problems. A good chiropractor uses not just manipulation (mine does not use any) but also a hand held tool called an activator that works like a little plunger along side the bones on the muscles to help your own body move to where it is most beneficial.
My experience is due to muscle problems, so it is not quite the same thing but I also have scoliosis. There is no reason to try to straighten the curve in my back only to keep me mobile and able to work. This really is my only option because Md's generally do not know enough to help.
