This could apply to exercise, housework, organizing papers, etc.

Baby steps:

Start by saying "I'm going to exercise for 5 minutes today... or 10 minutes..." or whatever you feel is a workable *chunk* When it makes you feel better, you'll be more likely to do it again, longer and stick with it. You'll look forward to it then and it won't seem so overwhelming as "I'm going to exercise for 30 minutes starting now."

Ditto for housework and organizing. Don't say "I really need to clean the living room today." BLECH!!!

Say "Today I'm going to clean off ONE tabletop" or "one drawer of the desk" or "one countertop." If the closets are a hideous mess, don't say "I'm going to clean the hall closet" say instead "I'm going to clean ONE SHELF of the closet."

Seeing how nice it looks now that it's organized will definitely be the best motivator for doing another shelf... and another... either that same day or when you have the next little chunk of time.

Baby steps. It's not so overwhelming when you set smaller, quicker, easier to achieve goals for yourself and then when you see the progress it will make you feel so good you'll have the motivation to continue.

Best to you!

The best suggestion that I can offer is to take on the simplest task first, a mindless one such as washing the dishes rather than trying to get going full steam ahead on something that requires more concentration. While your hands are busy, you can use your underemployed brain to think about the other things that you have to do. It will help you get started and in the right frame of mind for the bigger tasks to come. It also helps to think about how good you feel when you've got an important task finished, so you can go back to relax with a satisfied feeling of accomplishment.

If you find a better suggestion, let me know. I have that problem, such as right now, and it causes me to waste a bit too much time here on Yahoo! Answers. No offense, Yahoo!, but I have work to do and your site here can be a bit addicting. I even posted a question several months ago, "Does anyone on this site ever get their housework done?"

Take a shower; you will refreshed and rejuvenated.
Go for a drive in the country and roll down your window and smell the flowers.
Call your best girlfriend and giggle like schoolgirls.
