You have three choices. . . your best bet is to join your local police department and work your way up the ranks to become a detective. You could get a good start in the military or go to college. In college, you would likely want either a liberal arts education and/or a focus on criminology and psychology.

You could also take a correspondence course to become a private detective, but unless you have a law enforcement background, you likely won't have the credibility to land any good clients.

The third is quite elementary. . . If you want to fast track yourself, just go out and buy a magnifying glass, a trenchcoat and a tweed deerstalker hat a la Sherlock Holmes. Wear them to all of your job interviews as a detective.

Good luck.

You are promoted to detective after being a 'regular' police person and working your way up to that level. And there are a lot of different kinds of detectives...so study the courses designed to help in the area you are interested in.
