these are natural salts leeching out of the bricks.i worked in a brick works and something was put in the mixer to eliminate this.sometimes some gets through, hence the white deposits. weak acid can remove this or if we had complaints from house builders someone would go round with wood dye of a similar colour. you get it mainly in new builds as the bricks are new .in time it decreases.

Bricks are made of clay, if this clay is taken out from some land full of salty area or the water used to make the bricks or the water used at the time of construction had salt in it, this dissolved salt when get water again by moister or by rain in the brick, comes out over the surface of the bricks when the brick gets re-dried.
Its solution is to rinse the brick with more water for long time so the salt flow out.
I've seen in above answers some people have answered it as lime that is not true, as lime once get wet don't dissolves in water again. So lime cannot come out at the surface of the brick.
It is definitely salt.

It is caused by moisture trying to come out from behind the brick. I'm not sure how to spell it but it is called efflorescence. There is a product that removes it but it cost. Check your local Brick retailer or commerical building supplier.

it is esserverent salts ..if you rub it and taste it they are salty ...trust me ..they wont kill you ..it is normally caused when the wall gets wet before it has dried out after it has been built .. if you leave it then it will go away but it will take time ..if you use acid you may damage the face of the brick try a hose and a scrubbing brush

It could be salt from the actual bricks or it could be a sign of moisture.

Is it lime?
A lot of bricks contain it and it does tend to come to the surface.
It's the same stuff that they used to use for painting lines on football pitches until they discovered the damage it can do if you get it in a cut.
