No environmental concern is not a luxury for the affluent
Environmental concerns comes with caring and worrying about our planet, being conscious about how we are destroying our planet, a willingness to extend our lives, planning to give the next generation a healthy planet etc
You can do your part by turning some appliances off, switching lights off, dont use a car for 1 day in the week, recycle etc

i don't see it as a luxury of affluence, my life has been deemed as poverty level in the USA, my guy and i can afford to have some of the things that are harmful to the environment, driving two cars to the same place, using paper towels, having children. we choose not to. it feels like it doesn't make a difference but it does with in my soul to know I'm not contributing to the over population, the cutting of trees, the poisoning of the air.

Think about it...if you raise the tax on gas (supposedly to make people drive less and want alternative sources) those that can afford it will not be inconvenienced, those that can't...can't.
If you can afford the extra $10,000.00 to get a prius you are concerned about the environment...if you can't...you're not.
If we use most of the crop of corn to make ethanol the affluent don't care, the poor who depend on corn as a staple for food get hungry.
If we set aside large portions of land (like the farmland preservation act in NJ) where home building is not allowed, the affluent will have parks, the price of adjoining land will go up so the poorer cannot afford the houses that will be built.
If companies have to raise the price of their goods to cover the price of being 'environmentally friendly' the affluent can afford their products... the poor...can't.
If you can afford the solar panels, you might help the environment. If you are financially struggling to just feed your family...you can't
need I go on?

Sure! Because people who are struggling to survive, those without sufficient food, water, shelter, etc., focus on meeting basic survival needs. Worrying about the environment comes further up Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs pyramid.

Well if so, it's no longer a luxury. It's a neccessity or there'll be no Earth left to live in. It always was a neccessity in my opinion but we were too stupid and shortsighted (and greedy!) to see it.
