Often, in warmer climes, there are bars or shutters so that you do not have to close windows. The air can circulate freely making it much more comfortable to sleep. I lived for a time in the far east and we did not have glass windows at all, just iron screens, bars really. Not for crime prevention, though that was a bonus of course, but for ventilation.

We're in Cancun, Mexico. Everyone has bars on their windows and walls, and a gate. You sleep very well at night (compared to Canada), but it's mostly decorative.
