I know it is not a stoat, weasel, cat, rat or otter. The pond is built up, off ground and surrounded by a wall. We live on the edge of town, surrounded by fields.

Stoat or weasel? Try putting small mesh chicken wire over it, or fish netting, secured well.

How big is it? A weasel is tiny(6inches), a stoat slightly bigger(10 ") with a black tipped tail.It could be a polecat or an escaped ferret but more than likely an otter or mink.Try to set a trap (humane of course)...let us know the outcome..I'm intrigued.

hi Beeba, i'm sorry to pay attention approximately your Comet-this is an ongoing situation for lots of the pond vendors on my talk board too. you have some sturdy suggestion with the replies (extremely the animal feeders which i visit bypass on!) Giving the fish a super form of plant disguise & places to conceal like plant pots on their components is likewise a sturdy attitude. i might upload that securely burying the perimeters of the netting numerous inches into the encompassing earth utilizing heavily spaced tent-pegs, basically leaving a small area of the element for every day upkeep secured with the help of detachable bricks or stones. One pond proprietor i be responsive to has shaped a heavy metallic grille such as a fire-shield yet setting up the actual shape of his pond & seeing that setting up has had a hundred% fulfillment yet of direction this is basically an selection with smaller ponds. sturdy good fortune & i'm hoping you do not unfastened to any extent further fish.

definately sounds like a mink. a predator that is almost unrivaled in theft of fish, eggs and small mammals. mink are between 1.5 and 2 feet in length. usually dark brown to black with a small throat patch of cream. they are agile climbers and expert swimmers. mink are wide spread and only absent from some remote islands of scotland. to catch it you will need a cage trap and some bait. or a mkVI fen trap placed in a tunnel and baited with fish or fresh meat.
