We are currently having a debate and though this may sound rather trivial, but at what time does the day become night and vica versa and why it is such a time. Some say between 6 & 7 but why is this? or does night time start at 12 midday and end at midnight?

I thought from 12AM to 12 PM was considered morning, yet some people will ask another, Where were you at 12:30 last night. I thougt that was morning? Therefore there would not be a 12:30 night time? Seems not reasonable if a person was asked, where were you at 12:30 this morning? To me, night time starts when the street lights come on and day time start when street light go off. So, why are other forms of day and night used.?

When night begins has nothing to do with the local time. For your purpose I think you will want to use the definition of Astronomical Twilight (as opposed to civil or nautical twilight) which is in the evening when the center of the Sun is geometrically 18 degrees below the horizon. Before the beginning of astronomical twilight in the morning and after the end of astronomical twilight in the evening the Sun does not contribute to sky illumination; for a considerable interval after the beginning of morning twilight and before the end of evening twilight, sky illumination is so faint that it is practically imperceptible.

As soon as the sun has disappeared over the horizon then I suppose that is the point we can officially say that it is night.
The length of night varies with the seasons of course, longer in Winter, shorter in Summer.

The official time for night to start whether it's Summer or Winter is 8 o'clock because up to that time it is evening.

The BBC website publishes sunrise and sunset times in the UK; surely day starts at sunrise and night starts at sunset? ...and day and night starts at different times depending on the season of year and your location?
