Mu USB drive could hold up to 500MB of data when i bought it. Now, it can store only about 200MB. Any excess files stored in the drive can't be read. The problem started when I formatted the drive and the storage space has been decreasing ever since.

this occurs only in two cases.
1.Over formating-formating without any mean may result in loss of storage capacity.
2.Improper removing-if pull ur drive without using the SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE option, this also results in loss of storage capacity.

Did you by mistake format it using the wrong formatting method ?

Some USB drives don't support FAT 32 formatting. In case, you did that the USB automatically develops grey areas where you can't store data. Consult the customer support division of the USB maker. They might help, unless its irreversible (which sometimes it is).

The same holds true for MP3 gadgets.

What you need to do is reformat the USB drive. again. Try defrag too. This will clear up space too.
