The first person who answered this question was correct, except that the proper spelling of "hoenfels" is Hohenfels. For some reason, 99% of Americans have a huge problem spelling that name; but as German place names go it's not that hard... if anything, you'd think Grafenwohr would be harder. Bear in mind, by the way, that Wurzburg, Garmish, Bamberg, Ansbach, and the other Bavarian locales where you'd find US posts actually host several posts, not just one; that's the way it is all over Germany, and indeed all over Europe, where ever US posts are found. Ansbach alone has maybe four or five little posts orbiting it. Wiesbaden has about that many, although they're a bit more spread out (Wiesbaden isn't in Bavaria--I used that as an example since I myself lived and worked there).

As far as spouse/vet preference, that's true, but it also heavily depends on the nature of the job opening. A spouse is screwed if the job opening is for CYS/SAS director and the spouse has absolutely no teaching/directing/managerial experience, "preference" or not. Many civilians who work on or near these posts are contractors, too, and that's outside of the ubiquitous "spousal preference" realm. It all depends on what jobs are available where, what your qualifications and needs are, and who else is also applying. Poke around, I wouldn't be surprised if you find something... civilians are EVERYWHERE on those posts.

Don't forget Wurzburg! Due to the BRAC (Base Reallignment) Grafenwohr is your best bet. They have consolidated most of the forces in Germany there now. The other bases have been drastically reduced in size.

The other answers are correct about getting a civilian job quickly. Veterans, veterans spouses, and other current federal employees get preference. It's also a rigged system based on WHO YOU KNOW. I've seen lots of people get screwed royally because someone knew the head cheese and got the job first.

However, you could get a quick job in the fast food industry there to get your foot in the door. Burger King would probably pick you up. I know that it's demeaning, but it would get you into the system and give you some exposure. Worth a shot. The PX (AAFES) is also a pretty good place to look.

There is a US Army base in Bamberg, Germany. Bamberg is located in the northern part of Bavaria in a region known as Oberfranken (and is about 45 minutes north of Nürnberg). The base holds about 4,000 troops and Bamberg is a nice town, not too big but not too small, and holds alot of history and culture.

Forget full time jobs right now. There's a hiring freeze going on at the NAF side of the house. If you're lucky, and I mean LUCKY, you get hired as a parttimer. There are always Flex positions available at the Bowling Center and the Club.

There are MANY civilians who work on military bases, but the only civilians living on military bases are Family members. (There may be some very rare exceptions, but none that I have ever encountered.)
