What is the model number of DVD. But the specs are from a new up to date DVD with the 18x. If the DVD player is having problem then you may need to change the region switch. If I bought a DVD from India I could not play it on a USA VCR. Has to do with region codes for the divd. Some trivia to know about the VCR.

Possibility that your DVD player lens is dirty. Get a DVD that plays on your drive and another DVD that does not. Go to a friends house and stick them both in his DVD drive. That way you can tell if it is your drive or the DVD. If he has the same problem then you know it is the DVD disk. If his can play then maybe your player broke down. Too many factors.

If you buy street DVD, sometimes they do not copy them right as they are bootleg and not originals.

Also, check the movie side (shiny side that plays the movie on) of the DVD and see if it is dirty or not. If they are used and then the movie has finger prints or smudges on it that would cause a DVD not to play. New DVDs with smudges may not play either.

No offense, but check first if your DVDs are not pirated copies and/or in good condition. DVDs with scratches are sometimes hard to play/read. :)
