My take would be the fact that he held the country together and refused to allow the South to secede from the Union ... although many in the South are still fighting that Civil War even today.
The emancipation proclamation was another biggie, but even that was an effort to keep the country whole.
He also was the epitome of integrity; something we haven't seen much of in the presidency since his death.

He was martyred for his cause..that kind of draws an underline to his cause and everything that he did right and people will forget anything he may have done wrong. Especially since it happened in a theater where he was off duty from "work" and just enjoying himself like an average citizen of that day would. It was a wierd way of dying that was never forgotten by people and was retold many times...
Now adays a President would go to a retreat, camp david, his ranch in texas, foreign country trips, etc on his off time....not like an average citizen would do or could do.And he would be surrounded by bodyguards and probably not go near a theater...
Just like at a funeral home when a relative dies and you tell all the things they did that made you laugh or helped you out and you forget and put aside the ways that they sometimes hurt you in some ways..(well unless they did something really bad).
He even looked AVERAGE...no president today could get elected looking that average...today politicians have to be good looking...oh i guess i did forget about Dubya..maybe I was wrong a little bit...
Good Lord Phoenix.!!!..did you copy the wikipedia or what? Just answer the question don't write Lincoln's biography here....

Lincoln was a diveder like GWB, he also said if he could free some slaves and keep others in slavery to preserve the union he would! so he didnt care about the moarlity of salvery!
In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln ordered the execution, by hanging, of 38 Dakota Sioux prisoners in Mankato, Minnesota. Most of those executed were holy men or political leaders of their camps. None of them were responsible for committing the crimes they were accused of. Coined as the Largest Mass Execution in U.S. History. (Brown, Dee. BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE. New York: Holt, Rinehart, Winston, 1970. pp. 59-61)
So hes not on my top ten presidents list

He started the worst ever civil war in the country - crushing a peaceful new country through a brutal invasion, and taking a few bureucratic steps toward abolishing slavery, but not doing anything to help freed slaves find jobs.

He was a poor president bringing on the civil war, when a few concessions to the south on trade could have prevented it. He freed the slaves as an afterthought and it was a poor thing to do without any program to educate or care for them, when the owner kicked the freed slaves out of their homes.

His popularity was lower than President Bushes and he was even murdered. He believed in the solidarity of one country united and put his life on the line to make sure it remained so. The slavery issue was secondary to this point, but it was also important.

he was a leader that led this great nation out of a war that divided us like no other war before or since. he had the qualities of leadership, and was respected by our troubled nation.
