When the hourglass comes up it means the computer is doing something i.e. loading a program
When in this mode its best to leave the computer until the hourglass has "stopped"
Click on Start/Run/type in msconfig/then click ok - when the window pops up click on the "Start Up" tab and uncheck what you want windows to start on bootup
You'll find windows will bootup quicker next time

many many things can cause this trytyping msconfig in the run box from the start menu look at the start up now this is a big warning do not uncheck anything unless you verify it is not needed like chat programs you use occasionaly if you dont recognise it as something you think you need do a search on the file name including the extension one of the first few links will usualy be a page the describes that file and weather it is a need file or not get rid of anything on the list that tell you you dont need to run. also run a spywear searching program i reccomend Spybot SD doing these few things should speed your computer

Sometimes a system process can slow your computer down like your anti-spy or ant-virus does a quick check you don't have to have programs running for a system process to slow down your computer, i have a network service that allows me to be on the net like its a system process that runs in the background sometimes that can become busy you can get rid of un-needed processes but its hard to tell which ones aren't needed to view the processes press Ctrl+Alt+Del then choose to view the Processes tab at the top hope this helps
