Manga/Anime is usually deep, funny, adventurous, and/or easy on the eyes! The art, storyline, humour or action is just that much higher than something you would get in a cartoon for kids. Little is made for the kids, and its more something for the teens to adulthood even if it has a card game attached to it. You can determine this from the dialogue what ages its for.
However all anime is not the same. Many are alike is someways though. All the animes you named deal with the warrior frame of mind. With good artists usually comes good anime. almost all animes start out as manga, so people who are captured by what they read and the story will decide if it is worthy to become a good anime.
dont turn towards things like Excel Saga or Bobo bobo which is off the 'deep end' and deals with strange humor. but most anime like Naruto is also about comradery too. I recommend Hellsing and Trigun too. Ranma 1/2 and Slayers have humor, but are also serious too. Filters are something in anime that you might not like
Update: for children, Pokemon has some good morals. young girls, I suppose Sailor Moon always gave good advice. Id probably say the card game animes like Yu-gi-oh are good for boys as one uses their strategy to overcome adversity, along with their intellect to prevent many fights.

Well, most of the more serious manga/anime are. Believe me, there are much more noir ones than those you mentioned.
But then again, there are also those light-hearted, funny anime, for example Gakuen Alice (Alice Academy), and Ultra Maniac. They're kinda young-adult-ey, but cute and funny.
On the other hand, some cartoons (in other words, non-anime) are also developing a more serious flavor, having deeper storylines, etc. Look at Teen Titans or Xiaolin Showdown, for example.
Suffice it to say, there are anime/manga that are deep, and there anime/manga that aren't.

yeah, but some is really stupid too, involving worse animation than Power Rangers episodes. (comparatively speaking of course)
Ones I recommend are:
* The Vision of Escaflowne
* Hikaru No Go
* Samurai Champloo
* Samurai 7
* Bleach
* Last Exile
and One Piece (all of these being subbed. DO NOT watch any of the dubbed versions. The translations were watered down for American censors.)

Yes, it's what sets anime apart from other "cartoons". They make sure that in each character they're unique and like us have personal flaws. I recommend Detective Conan as well and kareKano, but if you really want those philosophical blahs with a pack of action, Fullmetal Alchemist is the way to go!
