The first law of thermodynamics states that energy cannot be destroyed but only changed from one form to another. As the human brain generates a lot of energy, it has to go somewhere after death. Some people believe that there are more planes of existence than the material plane on which we live. There is an "astral" plane, where poltergeist phenomena are thought to come from. The astral is said to be the place where emotions take form. If a person dies violently, has "unfinished business" or has lived a bad life, their energy can linger in this place and manifest as poltergeist activity. A person who has lived well or dies peaceful may ascend to the spiritual plane and a higher level of consciousness. In spiritualism, this is known as "crossing over".
It is difficult to understand the motivation of a poltergeist because they are not intelligent beings, they are an echo of a negative feeling. They may be jealous of life, bitter or angry for some reason. This manifests in the cruel behaviour you describe as torture. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence for this. Many people have reported being pushed, having things thrown at them, and have even been scratched and bruised. This occurs because poltergeists "feed" off the fear they cause, giving them more energy to manifest and affect their surroundings. This is why they tend to bother people who are sensitive and children because they give off more energy. Some famous poltergeists include the Enfield poltergeist and the Mackenzie poltergeist.
The term "ghost" is most typically used to describe a humanoid apparition. They are less frequently involved in harming humans and may be examples of the "tape-recorder" theory in which past events are replayed passively. Ultimately, scientists still cannot explain the true nature of the conscious mind. Until we understand how our mind works, we cannot explain such paranormal phenomena.
Hope this helps.

I see. You are a ghost and you need tips? I can help! Some poltergeists are evil or looking for a laugh so will scare/hurt you depending on the evil of the ghost. Not all ghosts are evil. Some are just there. Like a time window from doctor who. Perhaps a psychic link between you and a dead person or wormholes or something can allow you to see the dead persons life in front of you every now and then. They don't know anything about it and can't see you, but can be unintentionally torturing you by scaring you with their presence. Also, some other poltergeists can be frustrated at not being able to rest and attack in frustration or to get your attention.

yes if they are mean. But there are good ghost also. Just find out what the ghost wants from you and see if you can help it move on. Most times ghost don't realize they are dead or they are so angry that they died. Either way you have to find out who they are and what it wants from you. All you have to do is ask it. And one way or the other it will let you know.
Just be careful and don't be agressive to it when you talk to it. OK? Good Luck

Little swine of a poltergeist used to torture me when i lived with my gran, he used to pull the duvet off me - literally have a tug-of-war with it, that or he kept on switching the light on when i was trying to sleep, or knock the books off the shelf, so they'd land with a bang on the floor, making me jump out of bed in fright
