Google Rankings can work on a number of factors but the main one is based on how many big sites of quality link to you.
so really the best thing is probably just to write something so good that a lot of people want to link to you - The bigger the site that thinks you're worth linking to, the better.

Write article on the subject of your site. Submit those articles to article directories. Be sure to include a link to your site in the articles profile.
Join forums on the subject of your site. Make intelligent, relevant posts at the forum. Include a link to your site in the Signature Line of your posts.
Create a Newsletter on the subject of your site. Submit the Newsletter to Newsletter Directories. Allow people to sign up to your letter for free.
Write an E-Book on the subject of your site. Give the E-Book away free as a reference source. Include a link to auto-responder sign-up page in all the places mentioned above.
Do good SEO on your page, get love from the Search Engines. Have your site eventually listed high in the results for searches relevant to the subject of your site.
