Hitler abandoned majority of Rommel's men in Africa. They were captured by the allies and spent the rest of the war as POW's.

Some of the survivors were reorganized in to other German Units that fought throughout Europe.

Rommel was extremely bitter towards Hitler about the treatment of his men and their abandonment. it is believed it was one of the reasons he agreed to join the conspiracy against Hitler.

German designated a number of units to bolster the Italian forces in there Northern African endeavors. A corps is a military unit smaller than an Army but larger than a Division. And normally is made up of at least 3 divisions.
This German contingent was refereed to as the Afrika Korps.
In 1943 the German Afrika Korps was defeated and its members that did not escape by ship back to Italy, Sicily, were taken prisoners and spent the rest of the war in POW camps. Being that the Axis forces no longer occupied Afrika there was no need to designate any unit in that theater.

The Axis forces in Africa surrendered on May 12, 1943. However, three of the German divisions that had fought in the Western Desert were reconstituted in Europe. The 15th Panzer Division was reconstituted as the 15th Panzergrenadier Division, the 90th Light Division was reconstituted as the 90th Panzergrenadier Division, and the 21st Panzer Division was reconstituted under its own name
