Writing and using an alphabet was developed there, they also developed mathematics as we know it and Hammurabi set down the first code of laws 3,000 BC. That region and its civilization is also credited with agricultural development and animal domestication at about 5,000 BC. The pyramids were built about 4,500 BC.

The area of Mesopotamia, also called the "cradle of Civilization" or the "breadbasket" of civilization, is known as such because advanced civilizations arose there before the Egyptians, although Egypt is sometimes noted in the Fertil Crescent. These civilizations formed literate societies around the 4th millienim BC. The reason WHY they did was because the fertile crescent contained the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which spurred much growth agriculturally. Societies that can support themselves sufficiently, and to the point of food surplus, can generally spend more time advancing on such things as literature, art, and advanced diplomatic government.
