It is just a matter of convenience! there are places where Wednesday, and not Sunday, is the weekly day off! Sunday, classically is the 'sabbath' day, so the day for rest and prayer, thus becoming the day off in many parts of the world!

People are away from home for 5 to 6 days in a week. The 7th day is meant for the people to spend the time with their family and do the personal works.
The 7th day is chosen as Sunday because it is falling in week end. This day almost all works stations are closed and allows us to take care community activities to meet friends and relatives.

Because the Bible, in Genesis where it describes God creating the heavens and the Earth, it states "and on the seventh day he rested" and Sunday is the seventh day.

Because our creator told us to rest one day a week, "the seventh day", and our ancestors decided that would be Sunday.

Because on the 7th day, God rested. Christian or not, most countries seem to adhere to the 7th day being a day of rest.
" And on the seventh day God ended his work which He had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made" (Gen. 2:2-3).
