i thought 'shine on you crazy diamond' was/were the syd songs...it's just a song about life to me. a awlk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage is about the sanitisation of life, trading in a life of some risk but some achievement for a bigger role in a smaller lifestyle. But more like the sentiments in radiohead's fitter happier than in marriage i'd say

the song was written about Syd Barret(sic) the founder of the group. It was a tribute to him. He was a genious but took alot of LSD and it compromised the band to the point that they had to replace him with David Gilmour. They still had enough respect to record a song about him. He actually came into the studio at the time of the recording and they say he didn't even know the song was about him. In fact, they did not even realize who he was. His appearance had changed to that degree.

it ws about former band mate syd barrett,who quit the band soon after they became famous,he spent most of his life as a recluse due to taking drugs in the sixties, he died last year
