an external hard drive generally is slower at writing files to disk then an internal hard drive. they can usually be broken easier due to no protection of the main box as well. but the good thing is you can take it where ever you want without pulling your computer apart! but then its able to be lost easier....

Hi Chip,
Do you mean RAM or Storage Capacity?

Memory refers to RAM usually and what you need to do is find out how many slots ae free in the Memory module Chip device. You may use Belarc advisor or such free program to discover your Sys config.
Then buy a RAM from the Market, put it in the slot and Voila, You have increased memory.
These are available as 128 mb, 256 mb and 512 mb. Choose as your pockets allow and based on your need to run what kind of applications.

External DD only increase your storage capacity. Data Transfer between drives is slower and also it may be more prone to Physical damage. Internal HDD is better as it avoids mechanical trauma, and the Data transfer speeds are faster. Do you need to swap large amounts of data, like movies and images etc often, from one PC to another, then go for an Ext DD. Else Internal is better.
Hope this ingfo may help you. Also you may specify your nature of work, then maybe all of us can be of more help to you.
Bye

An external hard drive is easier to fit as you don't need to open the PC, an external hardrive would probably just be connected to a usb or firefire port., it is also easy to use it to transfer information from one PC to another.

the downside is an external hard drive may be slower than one fitted internally which probably won't cause a problem if you are just using it for extra storage. External drives are probabl slightly more expensive

If you do want to fit one internally first check your warranty as opening the PC may invalidate this.

actually i think that it is not about disadvantage
it is about what you want.....
if you just want to increase the disk space of your computer and without other reason then i suggest you buy the internal hard disk ,but if you want to use the hard disk to save data and then can take it out to other place then external harddrive is more suitable and convinient ...... the disadvantage i think maybe external harddrive will expensive a bit than internal one....

It can get knocked over which is not good. A good point is if you change computers you can move files over a lot quicker to the other computer. It also depends on how proficient you are at fitting a new internal drive & also do you like taking the computer apart to do it!

You are confusing memory and storage space. RAM = Memory Disk = Storage Space.

Delete all the files that you dont need and dont use. Go on disk refragmenter and make some more room with the space you have left.

http://www.oempcworld.com/support/How_to_Install_PC_Memory.htm go to this site. It will tell you how to install your memory, but you will first need to identify your memory type, and buy the correct memory for your pc.
