It is a small garden (8m wide by 16m long) how many pipes should i lay across the eight meters down to my trench

put one in every 2 meters. but take into account that if they are not deep enough they will now work very well.

you don't say why you need a soak away ..is it for the house ..or the garden ..if its for the house ..then its a straight run to the soak away ..which should be as far away from the house as possible ..and should be at least 1500 mm deep by a metre square ..if the ground is clay ..then you have a real problem ..as the soak away will fill up with water and take ages to drain ...if its a soak away ..then you lay the land drains in a herringbone pattern ..but it has to have an outlet..like a ditch ..surround pipes in gravel to allow drainage
