...that reminded you more of a funeral?

Christmas with my in-laws!

I can't say that visiting my in-laws is like a funeral per say, but it's definitely very uncomfortable for us "outsiders" - those of us who married into the dysfunctional clan.

My in-laws are always drunk when they get together, except for my husband, who is actually tired of never seeing anyone in his family sober.
I can't remember the last time that we've seen them sober.

They always manage to corner my husband and me and gossip about each other, quite nastily, then they tell their tales of woe and ask us for money!
And, we're not talking about a couple hundred dollars, they ask for thousands of dollars and then get royally angry when we refuse.

Last Christmas I managed to sit back and simply observe, and I wondered why I ever let this group of drunken idiots intimidate me.
It was sad watching the other spouses of this family still trying to gain approval, only to be mocked and ridiculed once they turned their back.

We left after 2 hours since it was so unbearable and really, being sober with a bunch of backstabbing, whining drunks is not fun at all.

Thank goodness we only need to see these pathetic people once a year!

No. All of my Christmas gatherings are great a blast! Some of my family members are completely nuts, but that's what makes it so interesting and fun! I did, however, join a friend of mine 3 years ago at her Christmas dinner. Oh, My!!! Her great uncle (who was about 70 years old), got drunk and cursed everyone out AT the dinner table. He even accused his wife (who is the same age as him) of sleeping with every man in the neighborbhood! Exactly what neighborhood is this?!! Anyway, at that point, my friend's 2-year old nephew yells, "No!" and whips his bottle across the table hitting the uncle in the temple. The poor man falls to the floor, everyone is screaming and 911 is called. The paramedics finally arrive and cart him off (the man is still holding on to a turkey drumstick)! Half of the relatives are crying and the half is laughing thier a---- off! It was the wildest thing I'd ever witnessed.
By the way, the uncle was okay, but this gathering was ALMOST literally a funeral!!

yes, the atmosphere after a few minutes was just like a funeral. Conversation was forced... everything was awkward. The only other time we all get together is for funerals anyway. Next year I'm certainly not going through that again.

No and I'm sorry if this has been your experience. Maybe some of the relatives at the get-together are ones you only ever usually see at funerals.....
