In the 18th century , in Europe, girls had a debutante party when they became 17 or 18 yrs old and were ready to meet boys and date.
In Tamilnadu, there was a custom, when girls attained puberty they dressed up the girls like a bride and took her out in the street with her aunts , cousins and other relatives. A puja was performed and a feast was given.

This function was good at that time. The people had to be told that
The girl was ready to get alliances for marriage.
The girls was now an adult and boys had to be careful when addressing her.
She was given education in sex by her grandmothers and older people in the family.
She was taught what was expected of her after marriage.

The girls was not sent alone for fetching water or doing other chores.
Each month during the period, the girls would get time to rest for 4 days, as she did not enter the kitchen.

Now also it is prevelent in rural areas of Tamilnadu because they cannot afford to advertise in newspapers for alliances for marriage, or use the internet for it.

With education, many customs have changed and this custom is not followed by many affluent and educated families in urban Tamilnadu. It will take some more time to change the customs in the rural areas.

I hope this answers your question.

I agree with Evan at some extent and one TU for that but the so called security issue has been brought into the scene by the politicians. There was absolutely no need for Karunanidhi to raise a dead issue and withdraw from the government. No, I am not a UPA fan, no way but it is crystal clear that Karunanidhi compelled the UPA to cast vote against Sri Lanka in the UN keeping in view the 2014 Loksabha Elections. He wanted to lure the Tamil voters and this was a perfect stage for him to do so with elections nearing closer. Jayalalitha then wanted to prove that she also care about the Tamils and went one extra step ahead and banned the SL players from playing there citing security issues. This is what politicians do. Security concerns came from nowhere and became the most important issue. They provoked the people there and after people became violent, they rose security concerns. As for the central government doing nothing in this regard, they too are also busy in forming allies for the new government. Sad example of cricket being victimized in the hands of politicians.

First of all you guys should know what is the difference between traditional united living and what is an individual living. If you guys can spend money on what going to built a ashram or paying for foundation nope just gonna pay for family or techy or pub or girls or wife or friends or just spending to use ful things I agree.

First puberty is a traditional south indian function who love their daughters and she turn in to a adult we call all our relations and we do some sambrathayam it means we use turmeric to maintain her skin moong dhal to eat to make her stomach strong we wil castor oil to clean their stomach and we make her like a queen from that day its not advertising function you stupid fellows it's a family function only family and relatives are allowed and we care and we love our family and relations but you guys posting like a people who know everything.... But you all simply wasting time by thinking and exposing what you feel in stupid mind.. And please understand that.

Well they sure do make an issue in Tamil Nadu, being a south indian I find it really difficult to understand why one has to carry a pot on her head and walk around the house just because she is matured. I think its just a way of showing that "she" is getting older ... or trying to attract proposals .... But i certainly think this period in a girls life is difficult and changes, one should not make a show ... about it. And treat it like any normal thing.

I hate that bledy function. In the olden days why they did like that means,"In that age they will not let the girls to study. So if the girl is in age means they tell the world that one girl is in our home."Anybody wants to marry her means come and ask".But the people are still following that thing.
