I am an atheist because I don't believe in deities and the word atheist describes this state of disbelief. I don't believe in deities because no argument or evidence presented to me in support of their existence has been convincing.
1. Biology adequately describes life and emotions without appealing to mystical invisible dieties
2. Astronomy adequately describes the formation of stars/planets/universe/etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties
3. Geology adequately describes the evolution of the Earth, land formations, etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties
4. Psychology describes the human psyche better than appealing to mystical invisible dieties
5. Appealing to mystical invisible dieties is an appeal to ignorance
6. There's no physical evidence for the existence of mystical invisible dieties
7. A myriad of mystical invisible dieties have been posited by emphatically superstitious societies and have been proven to be products of overly active imaginations (today's religion is tomorrow's myth) and ignorance.
8. Believing in mystical invisible dieties seems to become quite absurd when those who posit the mystical invisible dieties begin explaining why and how they exist in the face of contradictory physical evidence.
9. As scientific knowledge increases, the role of the mystical invisible dieties oddly gets pushed further and further back.
10. Mystical invisible dieties are mystical invisible dieties (ie can never be found by empirical methods) That should be enough to get you started.
Without proof, its just fanciful thinking. To say that the bible says so is not proof. To look at the sunset, butterflies, and complex human organisms is not proof. To say that there is intelligent design to the universe or mankind can't explain why there were over 15 hominids that didn't make it, most notably the Neandertals. What are we, the new and improved models? What of the diseases, parasites, chid rape, predations, and existence of evil in the world?
It reminds me of the movie "The God's Must Be Crazy," where an African Tribesman finds a Coke bottle in the desert. I find parallels between his thinking and the modern day Theist very similar...."hmmm, bottle fall from heaven, must be God," and "hmmm, look at the beautiful sunsets, birds, complex human oranisms, must be God." Both are explaining one unknown with another, but proving nothing.
But, alas, there's a scientific reason for our belief in god using CAVE MAN logic, it's in our genes. To survive in a hostile environment, our ancestors developed a god to believe in, to give them succor in time of peril and to cushion them from the despairing future of their utter death and annihilation.
Obsolete genes do not die overnight, so we'll be seeing a distorted worldview for some time to come

Try answering the question about how this universe was made, about its birth.U cant get the answer infact no human has got.Hence the concept of God, Almighty came.It is some Supreme Power that is responsible for the creation of this universe & everything in it.Some call this supreme power as Rama, some Jesus etc.In the ancient times, primitive man very much wondered about nature & was also scared of it.He was very much impressed by the sun & its brilliance that he made it a God.The fire gave him warmth & at the same time it cud burn things to ashes,he was very impressed & made that too a God.In the same way mother earth too became a Goddess. In modern times, the belief in God gives some invisible confidence. In India, no film gets started without an intial prayer.Human needs some support & confidence.Hence these still believe in God though they havent seen it.

I believe there is a super power. It is God. God is everywhere and sees everything. God answers all prayers. Sometimes the answer is no. I don't blame God for my downfalls. I have free will and making wrong decisions can lead to problems. I know that God has been there for me when I had a drinking problem and was depressed. He was always looking out for me. If not him then someone or something. I turned away from God during my drinking days but he never turned away from me. Keep praying to him and also seek out professional help with your problems. God will help keep you safe, pray, pray, and pray some more.

For starters, even if God was a creation of man's imagination, it was definitely not by his stupidity. No idiot would be able to write a book whose teachings still prove true even in today's modern society. Read the Bible and you will see that it teaches, for the most part, good things.
Your question, unfortunately, cannot be easily answered. I am an agnostic turned Christian. I can tell you that I have seen this debate from both sides of the argument and have come to realize that the issue of whether or not God is real isn't important. What's important is that we all try to live by what the Bible teaches. Why should you read the Bible, you ask? This is why: although the Bible is old, the philosophies and lessons it teaches still applies, even today.

there is no God in the usual sense. The usual sense of God is some old guy sitting in a big throne somewhere watching our every move, pacing back and forth, making complex calculations in his head on how he will judge everyone. The truth is there is no God like that, that will help you with what you want. that is not to say there is not a higher power. the higher power of course is your mind, and it depends on how high ur understanding is of reality that determines how much power you can obtain. so in a sense, yes he or she does hear your prayers because YOU are the God. we are all God. Consciousness is God. the very act of "being" IS God, it is what allows for everything to be possible. infinite possibilities and you my friend, are your own gatekeeper.

I am tempted to be flippant but that would upset you all the more.
Let me suggest that because you do have these VERY serious questions perhaps you should see if the Free Thinkers Society has a chapter where you live and attend a meeting or two. They are non-dogmatic and veryrational. A great group of people, I have found.

Whoa... calm down.
God is a fictional man created by men. I say he's "a man" because we ascribe to him: intentions, free will, emotions and intelligence. These are all human qualities. Where did we get these ideas from, but from observing ourselves? There's nothing else in our experience that has these qualities.
Once you understand this, you will stop being so angry, and only feel sorry for people that believe in god. And hopefully, you will even start accepting responsibility for your own circumstances.

Think of this, you are a human. You live on this unexplainable planet with billions of other life forms, while every other planet we know of has absolutely nothing alive or intimately interesting on it. Godly forces exist on this Earth. Tidal waves, hurricanes, and earthquakes are powers beyond the ability of mankind to control. Those are godly forces. Those are the laws of the land, and the laws of the universe. Those forces cannot be denied, and they are in power. They are in control. This is a force that just exists, and one that we have to live with. This is an undeniable truth, and this is what I believe god to be!

I came across this poem when I was 15 and never forgot it. It helped me It took me 10 years to understand. God helps us in the way that is best for us the solutions he gives us are not always to our liking, but he fulfills our needs not our desires.
As children bring their broken toys with tears for us to mend I brought my broken dreams to God because he was my friend.
Instead of leaving him in peace to work alone I hung around and tried to help in ways that were my own.
At last I snatched them back and cried" How can you be so slow."
MY child he said" What could I do ,You never did let go."
LET GO

Religious issues are often sensitive topics but here's my take. I don't care what is god and whether he exists, this is because I know that belief (faith) in a god/gods helps me (and others) get on with our lives when we meet setbacks (hence the laments about fate, karma, qi etc.) and generally gives us hope (to continue living, as tomorrow could be a better/luckier/healthier day).
