I'm a mechanic, and own a shop. The best way to find something like this is to go to a parts store, and look at a new one. This way you will know what it looks like, thus making it easy to locate. They are always mounted on to the intake on the top of the engine. They can be a pain to get to sometimes. I'm not sure I understand $300 for the part though. That sounds about $220 too much for one. If it is integrated with a sensor on top of it, it could be as much as $150, but that does sound like a lot to me. Try some other parts stores.
Cleaning them will be a quick fix sometimes, but in my experience, they will stick due to wear in the shaft, and it will shift to one side and stick. It's not caused from build up on it, but wear in it. You can try cleaning it, and it may work fine for a while, but you can rest assure it will do it again real soon. Sorry to have to tell you this, but it's true. If it cost that much, I would look into getting a used one from a junk yard. It might not be much better though.
Glad to help out, Good luck!!!

Unfortantly it is rare that you can clean EGR valves and get them to work properly again. Should you wish to try you will need to get the gasket(s) for reinstall.

EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recycling and most can be easily found. Look for a small mushroom or UFO shaped item about as round as a coffee cup. It should be tarnished or even lightly rusted from the the heat. There will be a metal pipe from the valve to the exhaust and a hose from the valve to the intake of your car.

If your esteen is front wheel drive the engine should be moutned sideways and the valve is normally then just above the exhaust manifold between the radiator and the engine.

You could also try to get one from a Junk Yard (breaker)

Good luck

If this vehicle of yours is still under a warranty for parts & labor you may want to take it back where you got it and have them fix it for you. And while I do have your attention what is an "egr"?
