I have tried several software but none of them seem to work

As already mentioned, this works for me:

Once you have downloaded a YouTube vid you need to view it somehow.

VLC is probably the best way as it plays YouTube videos without a hitch (be sure to rename the file .flv if it hasn't already been):
http://www.videolan.org/

Democracy Player is another way. You can download YouTube videos directly with it, and even subscribe to a Youtube search - but it's still very new:
http://www.getdemocracy.com/

if you use firefox there is an extension that works from within the browser.
