They need a big fan to ventilate the chamber. The power supply is one huge buzzing transformer. If people stopped buying cheap noisy microwaves then the manufacturers would have to come up with a quiet one. This is easily possible but this would cost more and nobody is bothered by the noise. You can never find the noise level rating of a microwave because it is not a selling point.

Well, they are heating something at a high degree of temparture. thats something that would make noise. There's also a fan that cools it so nothing else will me effected.
if they didnt constantly make noise, you might leave the room before you hear the loud noise it should make when it is done. Some constantly ring every so often so in case you dont hear it the first time, you dont come back an hour later wondering why your hungry. Im one of those people who has a single beep microwave, and Ill forget about it when I go to microwave something else. That constant noise is a big help! ;)

I think it's also a safety concern. Microwave energy rapidly heats objects so there is less of a safety margin with microwave ovens.

By making the fans louds, bells and whistles loud it's a good indicator that the thing is on!!!

Aha..ur microwave salesman ripped you off..japanese goods are better than US goods, may it be microwave, cars, or anything. So buy a jap brand next time.
