Unless its a trick question, its 4. Two beans in one hand and two beans in the other. Put in all in one hand and you get 4 beans. If it is a trick question, it can be 22.
Of course, if you have the mind of Edison, its one. 2+1 also equals 1. 2 glasses of water poured in another glass of water is exactly one glass of water (albeit an overflowing one)
