In all honesty, a trained eye can tell the difference!
One of the most telltale signs of a fake LaCoste shirt is the placement of the little alligator (I'm so not making this up, seriously). If it is a fake, the little alligator will be exactly aligned with the end of the segment on which the buttons rest. If it is real, the alligator will be more towards the middle button, not the last one.
