Your employer is REQUIRED to photocopy your driver's license and your social security card according to immigration law.

You have every right to refuse, but if you do, you won't work there (not legally, anyway).

its not illegal in the UK, it is however NOT a legal requirement (but be expected to bring in other forms of ID such as your birth certificate etc)

employers use it as a form of photo ID that will probably go onto your file, it doesnt even matter if it is a colour copy as if your license is genuine, when copied the holograms wont appear on the copy. If your uncomfortable giving your boss a copy, he may ask for other forms of ID including your passport, utility bills etc....its just to prove you are who you say you are.

If you job requires the use of a comapny vehicle or your are transporting people for work purposes in your car then its a requirement that they have a copy of your driving license, basically to prove your can drive, some companies require it for insurance reasons, and some require it if you need to claim money back on travel expenses

also if your job requires a CRB check then there is a set list of documents/forms of ID they require to do a check, you can get away without giving them your license for this but you will need to provide bank statements/bills/birth & marriage certificate.

Not unusual in the UK. Nowadays your employer is legally required to obtain proof of your identity. Driving licence is the easiest way.

Your employer is allowed to photo copy your driving licence, if it is necessary for your job, i.e. if you drive a company vehicle. If your job does not involve driving, then you should ask him why he want a copy of it, and if there is no justifiable reason for it refuse.

Yes, it is within the law ,to do this ,
especially if your job involves driving a company vehicle .

it is also considered a good indication of your identity
they can keep a copy on their files as confirmation .

The licence itself ,remains in your keeping .

If your job involves you driving their vehicles, they might need a copy for personnel records for insurance purposes - to show you have a valid or clean licence appropriate to the class of vehicle you'll be driving.

Why do they want to do this? Are you a driver or do you just work in an office? In any event; your employer would be infringing crown copyright in making a copy of a driving licence.
