It originated when people had to stand in lines during the war. Here in Britain it has just been carried on that's all.

I don't know isn't it odd
when we went to Zante last year the holiday rep was laughing at the English for doing this and told us not to do it because they don't in Greece and we would be waiting a long time as they will just go to the front

I think it is because British people have been taught to act this way.And in my opinion this is the right thing to do.I don't like it when,being in other countries,people just come in front of me and touch me and push.It is really annoying but that's the way it works in some places.

Its really annoying especially if you're somewhere with more than one person free to serve at a counter, and there is no barrier.

we're trained up to it from childhood, when at school we they rang the bell & we had to form lines, like pavlovian dogs we respond to our training.
its sad really.
