It is stand up comics. These were comedians from the late 19th and early 20th century music halls. They did their acts on stage. They did not use microphones until the early 20th century, they hadn't been invented.

They are usually up on a stage, with a microphone, telling jokes and funny stories (standing up).

its just the obvious, they stand up while they are doing there act. they are not acting or doing some sort of play. they stand up in the middle of a crowd and deliver jokes,
