There is a house shared by 3 people and the rent is $ 30/-. At the month end they gave $ 30 to the care-taker of the building to give to the owner. When the care-taker gave the money to the owner, he gave back $ 5 and asked him to give it back to the inmates. Instead of giving back $ 5, the care-taker took $ 2, and returned only $ 3 for them. That means each had to spend $ 9 totaling to $ 27. The care-taker took only $ 2-so it is 27+2=29. Now where is 1 dollar? Can anyone give me justification/answer for the missing 1 dollar?

this is more of logical trick

it's true that the 3 men seem to have paid $27 right?

But did you remember that the owner took $25?

so, the other $5 is divided like so:

$2 to caretaker
$3 to the men.

this i a trick question.

Very interesting question!!!

At first I wouid like to say that in your problem you are taking all these matter in a wrong way i.e.
(I) How can you add 27 & 2 ?
(2)In your problem the actual rent is $ 25 however you miss it.

You can think the total event in two ways.

First way~~~~~

In this case you consider only the total amount of money which is used to complete the whole dealing process.
To do this firstly you have to remember that the of that house got $ 30 whereas he return $ 5 to the inmates.
So the owner actually got $ 25.
Now the care-taker divide the amount $ 5 into two parts i.e.
$ 2 & $3. Here each of the inmates will get back $ 1.
So The owner got $ 25
Care-taker took $ 2
The inmates got back total $ 3
___________________________________
TOTAL $ 30
This is the amount which was given by the inmates as rent.

Second way~~~~~

In this case you have to consider only the actual rent of the house i.e. $ 25. As the care-taker divide $ 5 into $ 3 & $ 2 and gave $ 3 to the inmates, each of the inmates will get $ 1. So we can consider that each of the inmates spent actually $ 9 instead of $10. So they spent total ($ 9 * 3) or $ 27.
But the actual rent is $ 25. So there is an excess amount of $ 2.
Here the care-taker has taken this excess amount of $ 2 according to the condition given in your question.

Now I hope that you will get your desired answer and you will be satisfied.

The answers r not correct. The calculation has to be-3 people have paid @ $ 9 each amounting to $ 27. The care taker has taken $ 2. So the total is $ 29. Initially each 3 inmates have paid $ 10 amounting to $ 30. So $ 1 is missing. I know that 1 dollar has not gone anywhere. The other way of calculation is to justify the deal. But there has to be an answer this way also. In maths if 1+2 is = 3, 2+1 is also 3. So... the rest is for u all to guess and answer it correct. There is nothing wrong in the question.

Look at it this way: The care-taker is extra greedy and takes the entire $5. So each spent $10 totalling $30. The care-taker took $5, so it is $30 + $5 = $35. Where did the extra $5 come from?

This ought to show that the amount spent and the amount possessed cannot be equated -- certainly not in my case, alas.

BTW, do you know if they're planning to give up their lease in the near future?

The answer is in the way the question is worded. You cannot add what one person HAS to what someone else has PAID and come up with any kind of a meaningful number, you have to subtract.
Each man has paid $9.
The bellhop has $2.
Difference $9 x 3 = $27
2
$25
The hotel clerk has the other 25 dollars.

To look at it from the standpoint of the original $30.
Each man has $1.
The bellhop has $2.
The hotel clerk has $25.
Total $1 x 3 = $3
2
25
$30

To tell the truth, the question is wrong.
It's just a way to confuse.
How can you add those 27 and 2?Since the owner has taken 25 and care-taker took 2.The inmates spent $9 each. that's it.Each of the inmate will get $1 in return. The problem is solved.

The money taken by owner=25
The money taken by care-taker=2
The money returned to inmates=3
_____________________________
Total = 30
