Reading the news is good enough to have people figured out although I guess it is History by the time we read it.

History does not help us understand todays world but it helps us understand the past. the people and events of Past

It helps because it shows all the things people are capable of doing and THAT we do those things under certain circumstances. People do not change much over generations - so even tho it was swords and horses in the 1500s, the principles are the same. Learning about them is learning about us.

Understanding history helps explain why things happen, why people do the things they do etc.

Because the same problems arise keep arising and understanding them should help us to keep from making the same mistakes over and over. Now if our politicians would just try it!
