Well, bands tend to do it to themselves...if you record a CD full of rock songs...they're a rock band. If you record a CD full of country songs...you guessed it--country. Record labels and rock critics are largely responsible for the vast splintering of "rock" music (punk, alternative, new wave, post-punk, alt-country, metal, nu-metal, grunge, pop, funk). Just like Billy Joel, it's still rock and roll to me.

Fans of music can create new slang terms (which can become mainstream) for music that tends to break away from current styles and conventions.

This question seems simple, but in fact is a very complex "chicken vs. the egg" type trap if you think to hard. At one point there must have been only one type of music and that spawned all of the genres we have today.

Mostly, I think that categorizing music is pretty useless...unless you're speaking in a broad sense--most people can't agree on what say alternative music is (music from the early '90s that was similar to rock but different...how?).

Some bands fall into so many categories...so what's the point?
