What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a system of medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It is based on the belief that everything is composed of five elements: air, water, fire, earth, and ether/space. These elements combine to form three metabolic body types, called "doshas". The three metabolic types are vata (ether/space and air), kapha (water and earth), and pitta (fire and water).

Vata
Vata types are changeable and unpredictable, have prominent features, joints, and veins, and have cool, dry skin. They are quick at understanding new ideas and are good at initiating things but have difficulty finishing them. Vata body areas are the large intestine, pelvis, bones, skin, ears, and thighs.

Kapha
Kapha types are solid, heavy, and strong. They tend to be slow and have slow digestion, oily hair, cool, damp skin, and are slow to anger. Kaphas sleep well and have a tendency to procrastinate. They are prone to sinus congestion, high cholesterol, obesity, and allergies. Kapha areas are the chest, lungs, and spinal fluid.

Pitta
Pitta types are medium build, well-proportioned, and tend to maintain a constant weight. They tend to be articulate, intelligent, and can be critical with a short or explosive temper. Pitta types are efficient and are regular in eating and sleeping habits. They tend to perspire heavily and are warm and frequently thirsty. They tend to have acne, ulcers, hemorrhoids, and ulcers. Pitta body areas are the small intestines, stomach, sweat glands, skin, blood, and eyes.

What a Typical Ayurvedic Treatment is Like

An Ayurvedic doctor will interview and assess each client and determine which of the above type, or combination of types, predominates in a person. Physical examination is an important part of the assessment. The Ayurvedic doctor will examine the pulse, tongue, eyes, and nails.

After a diagnosis is made, the doctor will recommend diet, exercise, meditation, herbs, massage, and breathing techniques to bring balance. Ayurvedic doctors may recommend one of the following healing methods:
Cleansing and Detoxification (Shodan)
Rejuvenation (Rasayana)
Mental and Spiritual Healing (Satvajaya)
Palliation (Shaman)

Epilepsy can be treated through meditation based on self-realization especially when the patient is ten years or older to enable him to understand the abstract ideas as taught by the spiritual teacher.
