I suggest the Epson WorkForce 845 Wireless All-in-One Color Inkjet Printer, Copier, Scanner, Fax. I did an awful lot of research on-line with primarily two tech sites before I purchased the Epson all in one printer. For my needs as a home printer this particular model had the most features that I needed at a good price and even more importantly the quality of the printer, copier, and faxer was rated very high. What I also liked was the reasonable cost of the price per page and also the fact that the ink came in 5 separate cartridges also priced moderately. I could buy the color cartridge that was low instead of buying one large multi-colored ink cartridge that I didn't need.

Well, if you're feeling lyrical, and don't care about quality that much, you can buy an old dot-matrix printer at a garage sale! the cartridges are anywhere from 5-10 bucks and are available either at officemax or online.

however, I agree with g_a_n_d_a and say you should research before you buy.

There are several types of printers out there, the most common for the home consumer being the inkjet. These are great with color and photo people, but the carts can break you. I've seen the lexmark printers for 30 bucks, and then I see the cartridges next to them for 50. it's cheaper to buy three printers than it is to fill the thing up twice!

If you're gonna be doing a lot of printing, inkjet wouldn't be your best option, I would recommend laser for high volume, the cartridges range from 50-320 dollars, but you get about 3000-30,000 pages from a single cartridge! These also come in color, but as of now, they're still too expensive for my taste.

As for reliability, I can't say much, since I've used several different brands, each with different results. a lot of people will tell you to buy the ones with individual ink tanks, I disagree. all you do with that is change the ink TANK, not the printhead, which is where quality comes into play. over time, sure the cartridges will be cheaper, but the printhead gets dirtier and grimier over time, which leads to blotchy printouts. this leads you to being angry and buying another printer!

I usually go for the models with the tri-color carts, they may be a bit more money, but they're also refillable if you want to save a bit.
with these, you're not only changing the ink tanks, but the print-head as well when you change the cartridge.

I can't say much about the 'best' printer either. Each manufacturer has their own niche in the market. I would check consumer reports for a good comparison. just remember, bigger is not always better. you could spend 5000 bucks on the latest greatest printer, but it may have features you don't want or need in a printer.

Look for one that meets the needs you have now, with a little room for growth later on. Get the one that will be the best value for your money.

when you go to the store, ask the sales rep if you can have a demonstration. if they don't want to demo the product, it may not be the best deal. ask about the ease of setup, what it comes with, what cables it has, what kind of freebies you can get with it. you're the customer, it's ultimately your decision on what you're buying or not buying.

The brand is immaterial, most of the major brands are much of a much. Do your homework by pricing the consumables pay special attention to the price of the ink cartridges, before you buy the printer see how much you will have to pay for replacement cartridges.
With certain brands of printer you can spend more money than the price of a new printer just by buying the replacement inks.
Try to find a printer that has separate cartridges for each of the colours there is no point in throwing away a combined cartridge that has only run out of one colour (think of the environment).
If you are interested in high volume (good quality) printing look at mono laser printers, stay away from the colour lasers for now (you will need to take out a mortgage to buy the toner replacement cartridges).
Good luck in finding the right printer.

Again I second that HP's printers are very reliable. To refill ink, Epsons cartridges need a special electronic "resetter" , otherwise the ink level still indicates 0 even after the refill. The resetter can be bought separately, (of course it cost money). Some refill kit do include the resetter together will the ink.

HP is a good brand of printers. I have tried epson and canon and both of them sucked, so don't get those, I would give you an exact printer but I don't know what you want (like a scanner, fax machine, ability to do photos, etc). Just go to bestbuy.com and look at the HP printers. And the ink isn't that expensive for HP either.

HP are good printers BUT when a cartridge has low ink throw the PRINTER away.
I am now looking for any good printer other than HP.
Technical support is ZERO.

HP - best printers, best performance, lasts for years.
Eventhough their ink is on the more expensive side if you buy it together (2 cartridges of the same color etc.) it is as cheap as Canon's which is one of the cheapest out there.
Also HP is easiest and most reliable for refilling.

I just bought an Epson (I think mine is an R6000 and it costs about 130 when not on sale), it's made so that you only have to replace the color that is empty and each color only costs around 15 (which makes it about 60 if you had to replace them all at one time but saves money in the long run since you don't waste money filling up red, yellow, and blue when you just need red). I've been using it to print my portfolio and am very happy with the quality.

Yes, I have always used HP printers. The one I currently is nearly 5 years old, and has never given any trouble. HP every time.

I'll second bauer's comments here - I've always used HP and found their printers reliable and easy to use. Though my friend swears by his Canon pixma...
