The popping noise is probably just metal expanding and contracting with heat. This noise can get louder if there is a heavy build up of minerals in the bottom of your water heater. This usually occures in older heaters that have not been periodically flushed out during their lifetime. If you notice any water dripping from the bottom (even slightly), call a plumber.

First: You don't have to replace anything unless your so rich you don't know what to do with your time or money.
Second: If you don't know how, bleed the radiators, then "top off" the reserve tank. This may be all you need to fix the noise problem. It's usually because of the expansion of the water against the cold metal of the radiator. A secondary reason is the area that's empty in the radiators.

If your water heater is 10 years old or older, I'd say replace it. If you're lucky, it's not a serious problem but you never know. Peace of mind is priceless.
