I am an atheist because I don't believe in deities and the word atheist describes this state of disbelief. I don't believe in deities because no argument or evidence presented to me in support of their existence has been convincing.

1. Biology adequately describes life and emotions without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

2. Astronomy adequately describes the formation of stars/planets/universe/etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

3. Geology adequately describes the evolution of the Earth, land formations, etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

4. Psychology describes the human psyche better than appealing to mystical invisible dieties

5. Appealing to mystical invisible dieties is an appeal to ignorance

6. There's no physical evidence for the existence of mystical invisible dieties

7. A myriad of mystical invisible dieties have been posited by emphatically superstitious societies and have been proven to be products of overly active imaginations (today's religion is tomorrow's myth) and ignorance.

8. Believing in mystical invisible dieties seems to become quite absurd when those who posit the mystical invisible dieties begin explaining why and how they exist in the face of contradictory physical evidence.

9. As scientific knowledge increases, the role of the mystical invisible dieties oddly gets pushed further and further back.

10. Mystical invisible dieties are mystical invisible dieties (ie can never be found by empirical methods) That should be enough to get you started.

Without proof, its just fanciful thinking. To say that the bible says so is not proof. To look at the sunset, butterflies, and complex human organisms is not proof. To say that there is intelligent design to the universe or mankind can't explain why there were over 15 hominids that didn't make it, most notably the Neandertals. What are we, the new and improved models? What of the diseases, parasites, chid rape, predations, and existence of evil in the world?

It reminds me of the movie "The God's Must Be Crazy," where an African Tribesman finds a Coke bottle in the desert. I find parallels between his thinking and the modern day Theist very similar...."hmmm, bottle fall from heaven, must be God," and "hmmm, look at the beautiful sunsets, birds, complex human oranisms, must be God." Both are explaining one unknown with another, but proving nothing.

But, alas, there's a scientific reason for our belief in god using CAVE MAN logic, it's in our genes. To survive in a hostile environment, our ancestors developed a god to believe in, to give them succor in time of peril and to cushion them from the despairing future of their utter death and annihilation.

Obsolete genes do not die overnight, so we'll be seeing a distorted worldview for some time to come

There are 2 possibilities either God exists or not. Both are a matter that need faith to accept.

If there is a God , then he has to be above and beyond everything men have known. If not, he is just another fellow like any other living being but little more powerful. To draw an analogy, man is more powerful than an ant, but he is just another living being. We can hide from an ant and bully it if we want, but we cannot create a new ant. So a powerful God, if he exists has to reveal himself to man. If not, man can never know Him or know about his existence.

For this very reason, it is impossible to prove God's existence
or prive the non-existnce of God and either believing or not believing becomes a matter of faith. If I say God does not exists, I am only saying, such a person does not exist in my experience or my knowledge and cannot be the universal truth. Or else I have to show the needed proofs. If all the people in the world agree on that, then we can just blindly accept it that way. The same is true for opposite too.

If you need God (if he exists) to show himself to you. You need to ask that in your mind or even if needed aloud genuinly. If there is a God,He have to hear you and answer you as and when He likes. If he cannot hear you nor answer you sometime in your life (need not be today), either there is no God, or if He exists, He is not powerful enough to hear you.

The Christian God is about social control not wish fulfillment. He was created as an extension of the Judaic God - a God that was created as a tool for the organization, identity and conformity of the ancient society or the Jews - a society where the Jews were a small people struggling in a very tough part of the world against powerful neighbors and needed to be strongly cohesive just to survive. Edit1: "All these "control the masses" arguments assume the people in control "created" a God that they themselves would not then be held accountable to. That is simply not the case with the Christian God." Not necessarily. You are assuming that the leaders of the society who create the god(s) must be hypocrites who just want to control society for their own selfish ends. That isn't necessarily the case. A leader could create a god that embodies the principles he/she believes in (and believes are good for society) and then "worship" the god in essence by following the principles while maintaining the facade of true belief as an example to the masses. In fact, what better way to have the autocrat's or the oligarchy's own ideas of how a society should be organized perpetuated than to ascribe those ideas to a transcendent being(s). Edit2: "Some of you bring up a good point about harsher religions. Harshness in and of itself does not imply Truth." Now you're engaging in special pleading because your thesis is shot. Your original thesis was that a made up God would be a lenient god amenable to our desires and whims. Since that is demonstrably not the case, as exemplified by the made up god of the Muslim religion, instead of just admitting your thesis failed, you then invoke special pleading of in essence saying "oh, but that's different".

God exists and does not exist depending on the person, look at the people that believe and begets so much violence whereas, you can't be a non believer and be a good hearted person it depends in what is in your heart the very existence of good and bad and the difference of accepting one or the other there has to be a balance to be able to survive, but, remember FAITH is what will keep us going

No. To much pain and suffering in the world to believe something so beautiful and loving exists. Look at what's happening in Poso Indonesia and Darfur. Men, women, and children, are being decapitated and ruthlessly murdered everyday. Nothing in the bible can explain atrocities like this and frankly it's ridiculous to believe in something with so much innacuracies and has scripture that is sexist, intolerant, cruel, and unjust. If god can create an entire universe with the snap of his fingers I assume he could take a few minutes of his schedule to help mankind rectify itself. But alas no one's coming to help us. There is no god.

Romans 1:20 tells us that we see all his invisible qualities in the things he created. The miricles preformed by Jesus when he was on earth were just a mere glimpse of the things that god will soon bring about on a large scale for all human kind. so for now we need to have faith in gods promises. and take in knowledge of him so that we can have a part in receiving the benefit of those promises. you should read Psalms 37. the whole chapter.

people think they can only perceive with there 5 senses and so they do not see god. Look inside yourself and you will find that there is another sense, another kind of knowing. That is how people see god.

There are a lot of people who have done that and found him. It is a repeatable experiment. According to scientific theory there is fairly good evidence that some kind of divinity exists.

Whether he is quite how people describe him is another question...

From the lack of convincing evidence I'd say there probably is no god but there is an Invisible Pink Unicorn. Her pinkness will run you through if you don't believe in her.

Liars. All of them, don't believe the answers you have been reading, they are the exact examples of imbecile reasonings and mock faith.. "God" as a tangible entity which human beings can touch, see, smell or see definitely does not exist. Yes, "He" resides only in the psyche of us mortal beings as a consolation, or an alternative explanation to answer for the unexplained phenomena we experience here on Earth. Have you ever wondered why almost all the images of "God" are so human-like? Have you asked yourself why each "God" (or gods, for that matter) of the various religions in our world act in accordance to the social norms of the society which "He" (or they) are worshipped?

Zeus, Athena and all the other Greek gods which flourished two millenia ago reflect the Greeks' philosophy of bolstering oneself through fame and warfare, hence their gods and goddesses doesn't act as consciously like the Roman Catholic God which commands the prohibition of "killing thy neughbor". Vishnu, Brahma and other Hindu gods are animorphous
(meaning they tend to look like animals) are worshipped in South Asia, and surprise! The animals in their society, are the same forms taken up by their gods. Observe the Western gods who supposedly told man to "have dominion over all Creation" in contrast with the Eastern gods and their philosophy which tried to encourage man "to adjust to Mother Nature". The importance of this contrast is the fact that individualism, independence and liberty are the norms in the Western world and that family-centeredness, conformity to the elderly and authority exist in Eastern cultures. Thus, respective "gods" display respective values championed in respective cultures.

In the end, "God" is merely the result of man's pathetic attempt to account for eternity's manifestation on this planet. The only reason why "God" and religion is still given place to thrive in the modern society is solely for the cause of uniting the people, fooling the weak-minded that something supernatural is in charge of their lives, their actions and their future (fate).

"If God does not exist, then he must be invented" - Voltaire
