What language were they speaking in the beginning of the movie? Since they were in russia it makes sense for them to speak russian but then later in the movie the girl didn't understand it. I don't think that she could have just forgotten how to speak a language from her childhood. So just to clarify, were they speaking russian?

I am pretty sure that they were speaking french, since they were in Paris. The writer of the movie wasn't sure whether the movie was going to be french or english and I am guessing decided to throw alittle bit of both into the mix.

Just a thought, but if he was a Gypsy, wouldn't he have been speaking 'Romany' which was the language of the Gypsy people prior to Their virtually being exterminated by the Nazis?
