Genetics seem to program girls to be attracted to behavior that is assertive and strong.
Boys attracted to soft and nurturing.
A mom who is assertive and strong might produce a gay son. MIGHT!
I suspect that most people put these attractions into remission and grow emotionally gaining independence from their parents.
Spanking is a symbol of control. Self-centered insecure men want that symbol of control. Immature dependent women might want that symbol of being cared about and taken care of from a man.
It seems like all sex that isn't performed for reproduction is neurotic and unsane in some way and we all indulge in our neurotic fantasies and I won't say if society is healthy or not. These fantasies can be like alcohol. Some people can handle them and some get dependent on them. They might get some people in prison because hangups can be progressive.

If they're being spanked by someone they trust, it can be a safe and erotic way of ceding control. Also - though it's hard to believe if you're not into it - I've often heard women say they never feel so protected and cared for as when they're across their man's knee being soundly spanked.

But they really don't, and just put up with it.
