Ah I suppose my greatest flaw is speaking without thinking. I have a tendency to run my mouth and say how I feel no matter what. In situations that are kind of similar to the one you're asking about, I just say how I feel. I'm completely honest because if I'm not then they could feel like I cheated them. But I want them to know that I didn't.
When I really think about it though, how can you actually tell someone 'please don't fall in love with me'?
That sounds arrogant and rude and extremely presumptious.
Then again I guess you could treat them the way you want to be treated... as a friend and hope they get the point. But if they don't, honesty is key. Sometimes the pain of the truth is worth it because the effects of a lie are long-lasting and hard to take back.
I'm not really sure though. Like I said, I have a habit of running my mouth. I've never actually told someone 'don't fall in love with me' because it just sounds wrong. I just make sure they know I'm interested in friendship and friendship alone. I think most people are smart enough to get the point.

Simple, I left town. I was single and I new I was not ready to settle down. And this girl I was living with had a heart of gold. Thought all I needed was pure, sweet love to cure all my bad habits. The only problem was I loved my bad habits. So one night, after we had had a bad fight, she went to take a bubble like normal. I told her I was going for a walk, like normal. Which usually meant I was going to find a bar and get even drunker than I already was. Except this time, I stuffed my clothes in my sea bag tossed it out the window into the dumpster below. Told her I was going for a walk and to get a pack of smokes. Walked out that door and never looked back. I caught the next bus out of town. I think I wound up in Idaho or Montana, drinking and partying all the way. She was a good kid, a sweet kid. And she certainly deserved something better than wasting her time on a drunk and an addict like I was back then. You can't help people that don't want to be helped.

I liked this older guy as a friend and I thought that's all it was for him too, till he made a pass at me. Freaked me out for a minute and after I regained my composure, I had to tell him straight up that we were just friends and that was it. He pouted and didn't speak for a while, but oh well. I won't do something with someone I am not attracted with. Can't do that!!!
Telling someone out right is the best and safest way. I thought he was never going to speak to me again, but after his feelings healed, he started back speaking.
Our friendship is NOT the way it was, but he won't have the chance to freak me out again either.
People are too crazy these days to let someone go on thinking something else will evolve when you know it won't.
Just be careful out there.

Yes. I just kinda made myself scarce, kept my distance. And if she approached me about it, I'd make jokes and laugh. People do not like to get laughed at in matters of the heart.

I didn't like him, but I didn't want to hurt him either. I just told him I didn't have feelings for him, and that it needed to stop because I didn't want to hurt him.

there are many ways...
harsh way is to turn cold on them...it really breaks a person's self esteem and could be personal that they would leave you.
or
dismiss the good qualities they like about you when he/she is around you
