just got my new computer yesterday without XP pre-installed. when i tried to install XP it only recognized 131 G of hard disk space while in fact i have a 250G hard disk. i was told that i should go ahead and install XP anyway then install service pack 1 and 2. after that my computer should be able to recognize the full capacity of my hard drive. My question is how do I get my computer to recognize the "hidden" harddisk space once i get SP2 installed? I am quite new to this so please bear with me. thank you for you help!

When your PC first boots up click the pause key at the Post Test (black & white text). If you dont get this then click F1, F2, Esc or the Delete key (PC's are different but either one of those). You will enter the Bios setup (if the windows screen begins you have to reboot and try again)

Once inside the Bios look at your drives, it should tell you exactly what the capacity of your drives are. If not 250Gb go back to the shop and question wassup (exit and "dont save settings")

Continue to install Windows (it may give you the option of partitioning again). When windows is installed go into "My Computer" and all your partitions / drives should be present

After install, go to :
Start, Administrative Tools, Computer Management (open with the +sign), Disk Management this is a much better management package than dos partitions. You need to select NTFS file system for the best performance.

You'll need to read help to understand what you are doing. You may want to install windows on a partition of 40 Gig and then you can store data on D:, this makes backups easier

You need to change the info on your bios about your hard drive. When you boot up your computer, it tells you a button to push to get into your bios (it's usually something like DEL or F5). Once you get in there browse around until you get to the drive information. You can change the capacity there.
