I see many users who say BET, miss Black USA, and Black history month are racist. I think people misunderstand the meaning of the word racism.

Racism is a belief system or doctrine which states that inherent biological differences between human races determine cultural or individual achievement — with a corollary that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others
Ethnocentrism or ethnocentricity is the tendency to look at the world primarily from the perspective of one's own culture.

It is a subtle difference but (I think a big one) with ethnocentrism to a certain degree it is ignorance and a false belief that you use what you know as a benchmark that other 'cultures' have to live up to. Whereas racism is even more 'simple' in the sense that a judgement is made on a person purely because of the colour of their skin or them not 'being from' the same country as another person. Therefore the level of ignorance in true racism is even lower and more superficial!
Yes I do think that people misunderstand and misuse the term racism. It is like any general term that ignorant people get a hold of without taking the time to understand what they are actually saying or believe in!

I think it's a matter of what is not only interesting to you, but to which groups you align yourself most often. If viewers of BET, Miss Black USA, black history month are of interest to an individual does it mean they are racist? I don't think so. Sometimes I watch Bet and I find black history month very interesting. If you want to talk about ethnocentric folks, look no further than the Irish. They believe they are the end all and be all to all that is wonderful in the universe.

Racism is a belief system or doctrine which states that inherent biological differences between human races determine cultural or individual achievement. Some writers have used the term racism to refer to preference for one's own ethnic group (ethnocentrism), fear of foreigners (xenophobia), views against interracial relationships (miscegenation), and/or generalizations about a specific group of people (stereotype)

well ethnocentrism is belief in the superiority of one's own ethnic group. Racism is hatred or intolerance of another race or other races. There is a difference. I agree with you. Some do misunderstand the meaning.

You're right. And - many people with darker skin would argue that black skin is not an ethnicity, that there are many cultures and social classes that have people with dark skin.

Still, ethnicentrism is simply seeing things from a certain ethnic groups values and worldview. Racism is about negative bias.

Racism is the concept that one person is better or lesser simply based on the color of their skin, or any policy that dictates according to that premise. Ethnocentrism is the distorted view of another culture being subordinate to your own.

Without using a dictionary definition, to be ethnocentric is to place one's own race as the center of focus. This can be done for any race. This has nothing to do with how the other race is viewed.
