My female beta is covered in a 90% clear whitish gel. Yes, it is a female and we had her for about 3 weeks. I've had pet fish my whole life and they all live a long time(including male betas I've had). I changed her water today. It was de-chlorinated, and I didn’t mix in any of her old water. She is on a diet of Freeze dried blood-worms, and lives in a 1 gal. Tank with a fake plant. She is also swimming in a jerking monition because the gel is giving her problems moving. I put in an ick/parasite treatment about 5 min. ago. What should I do now?

I just noticed when I was changing her water. Update: You were all a huge help, but sadly the problem was not spotted soon enough and passed away hours later after it was spotted thank again for all your help. It will be used for future reference. Thank you again.

Ich's symptoms would be white spots not a gel like coating on the fish. However (Chilodonella) which is treated with the same meds. as ich does produce greyish white to blue color on the skin and gills. If the gel you described has a stringy or cotton look to it I would say you have a fungus problem. There are several meds. available at pet stores, but it sounds like the disease is advanced in your case.

For severe cases like this we use mercurochrome. However this med. requires you to net the fish and apply with cotton swabs over the fishes body. Be sure not to swab the gills directly.

A good pet store med for fungus we like is Fungus Eliminator made by Jungle Labs. Simply follow the directions on the bottle to treat.

Good luck

i be attentive to the way you experience. while i glance at my 2 betta boys(of their divided ten gallon) i won't be able to think of them lower back in the cup of water i chanced on them in. Bettas cost the keep approximately 25 to 40 cents each and each. whether they're only 5 greenbacks, that's a extensive markup, and once you tell clientele, "All you like is a vase..." this is quite some sales. The shops circulate away clientele uneducated, uneducated people kill their fish and purchase new ones greater many times, the shops make greater funds. It sucks. save the bettas you may, instruct the folk who want to pay attention. think of sturdy innovations for something of them. God is attentive to the shops won't exchange.

i just got a betta covered in ich -- that was the way it was at the pet store -- it was pretty awful so i got it to try to save it. it was so covered it looks like it is dipped in sugar like a sugar coating. is that the way it looks? treatment for ich takes forever -- just keep using the ich meds and change the water daily for about a month and she should be fine. its kind of a pain -- i miss a day or two inbetween.

try going to bettatalk.com and see if you can find any information on there.

If I can remember from childhood, we used to have fishponds and aquarium. but we don't change the water everyday. The white stuff is fungus. You might try fresh plants, not too much. The treatment I remember is a few drops of gentian violet.

I agree that it sounds like Ick. It is treatable in most fish, but you have to catch it early. You can still try to treat it, but it sounds like she is too far gone. You can get the medication at WalMart or a pet store. If you are going to try to treat it I wouldn't wait any longer.

ooh. Sounds like bad case of Ich.
I dont know if waiting this long to do something was a good idea.
The treatment was a wise idea but most likely too little too late.
sorry.
