I was raised to take care of others first. To put others ahead of me. Then one day I realized that I was an angry person. So I started taking care of me first (I am still compassionate and giving and will go out of my way for some people sometimes)... I am alot happier, but because of how I was raised... sometimes I feel selfish still... What is your opinion?

Of course you aren't being selfish. Your parents raised you the way they thought best, there is no correct way to raise children because we are all so very different. If we all give our children love, support and confidence they will develop into adults with compassion and understanding. You must take care of yourself mentally and physically and stop feeling so angry. You can't change the past so move on and become the person you were destined to be, kind, helpful and happy!

Taking care of others first is very good, but only when the situation demands it. If you require to take care of others before them then do it . It is not selfish. Sometimes one has to be in a position to help others. Only then he/she can help others.

I think self respect is the most important thing of all. If we all had a bit of self respect this world would definately be an easier place to live in. Whilst I don't think it's a good idea to go out and deliberately antagonize and hurt people you have to put yourself first otherwise who else wll?

I am like that too. People always tell me how compassionate I am and it's starting to burn me out.
I never get time to myself and if I did, I'd spend it doing something for someone else. I'm starting to resent being nice and becoming bitter from it. I wish I had a better answer for you but I will "star" this question and check back to see what others have to suggest.
Good luck and God bless!

I think this depends on cultures... eg. from the culture where I'm from it's almost it but this does not mean you have to starve yourself for the sake of others but just try be flexible to others according to the bible, maybe.

There is no way you can help others if you don't do that to yourself which is why you have to invest in yourself and then you can give others from what you've invested or else there is no way or nothing you'd be able to do for others.

Thanx!

Its not selfish,,you have to do whats best for you.And you have to take care of yourself. And you are still compassionate & giving.Your on the right track.Sometimes,,some people need to take care of themselves & quit relying on other people to come to their rescue,,its better for them in the long run. ;O)

You sound very healthy to me. You have to be able to love your self in order to love others. If you are not taking care of your self, you become emotionally bankrupt. The emotionally bankrupt have nothing to offer others but impatience and anger.

its not selfish as long as its not at the expense of others. if everyone took care of themself and made themself happy, just think of what a nice happy world this would be.
